Shiksha, is an initiative from SGBS Trust which is to provide Primary education for the underprivileged. The primary objective of our Shiksha program is “education for all” as education is a fundamental right of every child. With the mounting costs this fundamental right becomes an elusive fruit for many children even in this modern era. Shiksha program focuses on students from economically weaker sections. The typical beneficiaries are students whose parents are daily wage labourers, house maids, children supported by single parent etc and ensures that they are ably supported with school fees and education expenses.

How It Works

• The NGO advertises through leaflets to give financial assistance to the needy and scrutinize the applications received.
• The shortlisted students are called for interview and their academic credentials are checked then get selected.
• A cheque in favor of the school is given.
• The NGO gives preference to existing students who have been supported in the last year to ensure the continuity of the support.
• The program has actually helped these students from discontinuing their studies for the lack of money.
• To inculcate seriousness on the progress, the NGO insists in submission of mid-term mark sheet from parents.

The Statistics

• Shiksha supported the education of 437 students (220 girls , 217 boys) during the year 2013-14.
• 35% of the students are doing extremely well in their academics consistently scoring A+ grades in all subjects.

Enabling Schooling
Komala is working as a maid earning about Rs.3000 per month. The sole bread winner of the family, she is managing expenses related to rent, food and clothing of her two children. It is almost impossible for her to give education to her children even in schools with minimal fee.
Through Shiksha scholarship program, the education fee of her son Kiran R, studying in Grade 10 and her daughter Sandhya R studying in Grade 7 i.e. combined fees of Rs.3500 each year is paid to their school, St Patricks.
This financial support has helped me a lot and I am really thankful for it. It helped me to avoid taking a loan at high interest rates. The money saved is going towards meeting cost of groceries. Shiksha scholarship is very useful for the poor in the society says Komala
