Overview

SAMUHA is an NGO based out of Kanakagiri district, Karnataka state, India. Since 1989, it has worked with disabled people through its community based rehabilitation programme called SAMARTHYA. SAMARTHYA opened Orthotic & Prosthetics, Ear Mould Production and Hearing Aid Repair & Maintenance workshops in Deodurg, Raichur and Koppal districts, providing services to people from neighbouring districts as well.

How It Works

• Beneficiaries are identified during the village disability screenings, at weekly clinics and in self help group meetings.
• There are also referrals from other NGOs, hospitals and government departments for services around the year.
• Each beneficiary is assessed to ascertain the need and the appliance/aid is modified at our production centre to meet the specific needs.
• This donation option helps us provide a disabled person with a VISSCO wheelchair with puncture-proof tyres, metal brakes, adjustable foot-rest, foldable arm-rests, special pressure-relief cushion and other features.

A skill and a steady source of income..
Kalakamma, from Obalabandi village in Koppal, is 27 years old and illiterate. She and three other members of her family are hearing impaired. The family is poor and they were finding it difficult to manage their day to day living expenses.
With SAMUHA encouragement, Kalakamma joined the SHG of PWDs in her village and became a member also of the district level organization of PWDs. Samarthya helped Kalakamma get six months training in tailoring and gave her support to buy a sewing machine so she could work in her home and earn some income.
Today she has earned a name for her quality stitching and is even training two other women 3km away from her Oblabandi village who are not disabled, who are paying her for teaching them. With two sources of income, Kalakamma is able to contribute to her family income and her family is very proud of her achievements.
