 Mail

The children that attend the PYDS programme attend each day for 10 hours and come from poor or disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition to providing education, the programme also provides meals (breakfast, lunch, and snacks) in an effort to bring each child's BMI back to normal. Lunch includes rice, dal, a vegetable and salad; snacks include roasted peanuts, murmura, a spoon of shaker and roasted channa; and fruit. Currently 234 students participate in the PYDS programme; 189 students participate in the Day Boarding Programme whereby breakfast, fruit, lunch, and an evening snack is provided; 45 students participate in the SPRY programme which starts at 3:30PM and are provided lunch and an evening snack. Adequate quantities of each meal are provided to each student in an effort to ensure that no child becomes a victim of malnutrition. The PYDS meal programme is implemented in-house and individuals from the community are employed to help cook for the children. Vegetables and fruit are also bought in local markets. Additionally, the purchasing of food, cooking, and student intake is supervised to ensure no food is wasted. Results have shown that the PYDS programme has increased their sense of well-being and each person's ability to play and participate in activities at school.

Prachi Gurung
Prachi, a 7 year old lovely little girl is now living with her mother since her parents have decided to live their lives separately. She is in the care of her maternal grandparents. Her mother Maya is a quilter in our Stree Shakti Division where she earns about Rs. 1500 per month at the present time. They are surviving in very poor conditions and it is a daily crisis situation since all 7 family members live on the income of Maya and an old grandfather who is a labour. It is hard for the family to get even two proper meals a day. Prachi, her maternal grandparents, mother, aunty and 2 uncles live in a single kuccha room. They do not have any LPG connection and cook food outside under a temporary tin shed using wood fire.
Prachi joined our Programme in March 2011 and since then has been eating a balanced diet. With this diet and proper medical attention she is already beginning to grow up into a healthy girl full of life and a future. She takes good interest in her learning.
