Success Story

Gopa Phala is like any other tribal village of Udaipur district. Gopa Phala is like any other tribal village of Udaipur district. The village has a hilly terrain with most people following subsistence farming. They had to supplement their agricultural income with wage labour because of which migration is rampant and frequent. Young boys and sometimes girls also migrated. Those who did not migrate would have to look after the house, land and animals.

Given this fragile livelihood system, it was not surprising that the education status was bad. In1997 55% of the children were not studying anywhere. Over the last five years, Seva Mandir has worked simultaneously on improving people?s livelihood, motivating people to educate their children as well as providing facilities for education.

Today out of 143 children in the school going age, only 14 (9.8%) are not studying anywhere. The role of Seva Mandir?s interventions, the village committee?s leadership and motivation of the instructors Sukhlal and his wife Anita has been remarkable. Both Sukhlal and Anita have worked hard to improve the education status of the village. They have also set an example by educating their daughters.
