Success Story

Bhatki village has a predominantly tribal population. Bhatki village has a predominantly tribal population. The inhabitants of this village are dependent upon agriculture, wage labour and animal husbandry for their livelihood sustenance. In mid 1980s, both community and private pastureland of the village were in a highly degraded state and had little vegetal cover. As a result, people faced dearth of fodder, fuelwood and timber.

In 1986-87 Seva Mandir took up afforestation and pastureland development in private land of some households of this village. Encouraged with the success of afforestation and pastureland development in private lands, in 1994, Seva Mandir encouraged the women?s group of this village to take lead in developing a patch of 11.00 ha of degraded community pastureland.

Seva Mandir?s silvi-pasture development interventions have increased the availability of fodder and fulewood in this area. For example, in year 1999-2000 and 2000-01, when this area was reeling under a severe drought, inhabitants of Bhatki harvested 51,000 and 48,000 kg of grass from their community pastureland.
