Success Story

18-year-old Sunkawwa from Hunukunti village in Koppal District was born with a speech and hearing problem. She grew up without education, but joined the Self Help Group that SAMUHA SAMARTHYA started in her village. Her communication skills improved with the help of speech therapy and a hearing aid.

SAMARTHYA staff also motivated her parents to let her join a tailoring course, where she learnt tailoring and craft skills along with basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Sunkawaa applied for a sewing machine from the Hunukunti Gram Panchayat (under the 3% reservation for disabled in the self-employment scheme), and got it.

She has now set up a tailoring unit in her village and has become financially independent.
