Sponsor a livelihood activity for a poor woman by buying her 2 goats, INR 5000
 Mail

Vizhuthukal Trust primarily works for landless labourers, agricultural coolies and scavengers in Tirunelveli. Due to modernization and urbanization, agricultural activity has come down narrowly over the years. So women in the village find it very difficult to find any kind of work. The condition of destitute, abandoned and widowed women gets further worsened against this background.
How It Works

• Vizhuthukal Trust decided to help such women by providing three goats to identified beneficiaries.
• This would help them lead an independent and honest life.
• The self-help groups in the community selects and recommends the beneficiaries.
• The criteria for selection include women who are widowed or destitute, those who have a place that can be used as a shed, those who should some ability to rear a goat, and their economic condition.
• Goats provide an additional sustainable income source to the landless poor women; they could fetch an annual additional net income of Rs.4,000/- per year.
• This drastically decreases the need to borrow money from private moneylenders by 25% and increases the asset value of the beneficiaries' families from an initial Rs. 5,400/- to an additional 50% every subsequent year.
• No money needs to be spent to buy feed for the goats. They simply graze on land in the and around the villages.
• A goat starts giving income after the first year and provides a reasonably steady income for a minimum of 7 years.
• The Trust purchases goats in the local villages, from people who own more than three goats and want to sell in order to avoid transportation costs.
• The trust supported 14 women in 2013-14 and helped in income generation for their families.
