The 12 and 13 year old students of seventh standard in Kishor School in Tal, Murbad opened their books expecting nothing different. It focussed on gutkha (an addictive mixture of tobacco, areca nut, and aromatic flavours with additives). Almost everyone they knew chewed gutkha. The hoardings splashed all over, showed film stars with these packets.

With statistics showing 50 to 70 percent of municipal school children chewing gutkha, MELJOL, plunged into an anti-gutkha campaign. The children were surprised to learn about the health threats that those chewing gutkha faced and vowed to save their friends, family and themselves. They would do away with gutkha.

Armed with knowledge, eager to act,- children designed posters depicting it as a monster devouring health. A student campaign was also conducted to appeal to shopkeepers around their school, telling them about gutkha and its effects on their health and requested them to stop selling it. The shopkeepers agreed and have kept their word. Nobody sells gutkha in Kishor village now.
