Success Story

Our objective of spreading awareness on disabilities, manage disabled persons and extend a helping hand to the disabled persons who are unable to receive such support took us to rural areas outside Bangalore city. Our objective of spreading awareness on disabilities, manage disabled persons and extend a helping hand to the disabled persons who are unable to receive such support took us to rural areas outside Bangalore city. We came across Lakshmi, a five year old girl child who was severely mentally challenged with IQ below 20 and disabled with hydrocephaly (water formation in the head) for which she had already undergone surgery twice.

We visited Lakshmi at her grand parents home in Mysore (her mother is a widow) and started training her mother in managing Lakshmi. We introduced rehabilitation training for the child wherein she could slowly start exercising her limbs initially and later to sit up with support without discomfort. We organized her visits to the hospital for medical help. Her mother and family members were given counseling and training in handling her feeding, grooming etc.

Within a short period Lakshmi started showing progress. She was able to move her limbs easily, eat semi-liquid foods and sit for short periods with support. The changes in the life of this child was very much evident. The family waited eagerly for our visits and the time we spent with her. The mother is now confident of managing Lakshmi and what needs to be done in cases of emergency, medical contacts etc. There is a new hope for this family through our intervention and we are happy to be a part of this change.
