Success Story

Shanti Simka was brought to The Banyan on February 2004 by the police in a mentally disturbed state.

Shanti Simka was brought to The Banyan on February 2004 by the police in a mentally disturbed state. She was spotted near Central railway station along with a one year old male child. The child was then handed over to Udavumkarangal. He is studying in Grade 2 now.

During her stay at The Banyan she recovered gradually with medication, therapy and regular employment. She started working and engaging herself in various activities. She had been consistent with the information that she had been giving regarding her family and where she was from. Post her recovery Shanti was taken back home. Her sister in-law was not willing to keep her with them saying that Shanti had an adult son and a daughter to look after her. They informed that Shanti husband died long back. Her brother was not in contact with her children for many years. When the team asked their help to find out the children they joined to show the route to the police. It was a slum and the police asked the Banyan team to wait in the vehicle. They brought her daughter with her relative and said her son went out to celebrate Durgapooja.
Many of the officers in the police head quarters asked the team about the purpose of the visit and some of them tried to convince the family to accept the Shanti. By 10.30 at night her son came to the police station and he was little scared. The social worker explained to him about Shanti and her illness and enquired whether he is interested to look after her. He said he was young when his mother left them and was not aware of anything about her illness. He was explained about her medication with the help of police. He agreed to take her home. Shanti is currently still living with her son and is doing well.
