Success Story

Violence against women both in the public and the domestic sphere is on increase Violence against women both in the public and the domestic sphere is on increase and that most women get very little or no redressal to their problems on reaching a police station. It was felt that in the absence any specialised training of the police or civil society institutions to handle the psychological and social needs of the victims, the women seeking assistance were further victimized.

SAPNA partners with the local police in Alwar, Rajasthan to run a guidance and protection centre for women under the aegis of the Mahila Thana known as the Mahila Salah & Suraksha Kendra. The single window assistance can range from mediation to legal aid, to intervention within the police system and the judiciary, to economic rehabilitation, to trauma counseling, to shelter and care.

The centre now functions through the services of 2 full time social workers and two police officers attached from the Mahila Police Station.The centre till now has settled more than a thousand cases of domestic violence addressing a gamut of issues like wife battering, demand for dowry, harrassment by in-laws, desertion, etc. It has also provided counselling and shelter to women in duress.
