Success Story

Village Jamun has 1 Government middle school whose teachers attendance records were poor. Village Jamun has 1 Government middle school whose teachers attendance records were poor. In 2004 Seva Mandir discovered there were 37 children out of school. As well, many of the children were discouraged to go to school because of the distance from home. The children would go to the jungle for cattle grazing. The village, concerned about the situation, wanted to send their children to school.

With help of Seva Mandir, Jamun set up a rural school as an alternative towards the end of 2004. The village youth went to every house to encourage parents to send their children to the school. It took them 5 months to enroll out of school children. The community appointed Kamal Lal from Jamun as teacher. The children and Kamal Lal laboriously work on Hindi and Mathematics.

At the Jamun center all the children are now able to read having read many stories over the past few years. Seva Mandir is running 205 rural schools which reach 5000 children every year. After graduating from these schools the children go to Government schools for higher studies often outperforming children in Govt. schools. Rural schools have encouraged the parents to send their kids to school.
