Provide quality education for about 25 rural tribal children for 1 month in Shiksha Kendras of Seva Mandir, INR 4500
 Mail

Seva Mandir works mostly in tribal areas. The people in these areas mostly depend on agriculture, animal husbandry and forest produce. Seva Mandir's education strategy focuses on ensuring education for the school dropouts between the ages of 6-14 years and enables communities to demand quality education from the Government. Seva Mandir runs Shiksha Kendras in places where the quality of education is either dismal or is not accessible or available at all.

How It Works

• Shiksha Kendras are single classroom, single teacher schools providing education up to 3rd grade to children.
• The process of opening a new center is well defined and detailed. First, Seva Mandir conducts surveys in the villages and assesses the quality and availability of education for children 6-14 years old.
• The staff assesses the requirements of the schools through continuous interactions with the villagers and village meetings.
• The villagers then forward their proposals to Seva Mandir, if they feel a need to set up a school.
• After assessment and on the basis of Seva Mandir's capacity to run a center (as per resources available), approval is granted to open a Shiksha Kendra in a village.
• The center is run usually in a locally available rented/ community hall.
• A teacher is selected with the help of the local community because the teacher is also from the same or a nearby village with average academic qualification up to 8th grade.
• A teacher then undergoes a series of capacity building trainings.
• The stationary and other material is distributed to the children and the entire village is involved in monitoring the school and its teachers.

The Statistics

• In 2014-15 , 169 Shiksha Kendras (SKs) are running in tribal areas of Udaipur district. • The total number of children enrolled in these SKs is 6,090.

Children of Jamun love reading
Village Jamun has 1 Government middle school whose teacher's attendance records were poor. In 2004 Seva Mandir discovered there were 37 children out of school. As well, many of the children were discouraged to go to school because of the distance from home. The children would go to the jungle for cattle grazing. The village, concerned about the situation, wanted to send their children to school.
With help of Seva Mandir, Jamun set up a rural school as an alternative towards the end of 2004. The village youth went to every house to encourage parents to send their children to the school. It took them 5 months to enroll out of school children. The community appointed Kamal Lal from Jamun as teacher. The children and Kamal Lal laboriously work on Hindi and Mathematics.
At the Jamun center all the children are now able to read having read many stories over the past few years. Seva Mandir is running 205 rural schools which reach 5000 children every year. After graduating from these schools the children go to Government schools for higher studies often outperforming children in Govt. schools. Rural schools have encouraged the parents to send their kids to school.
