Success Story

In 1988, the original government funded Anicut dam in Hasreta village which was mostly destroyed by heavy rainfall. In 1988, the original government funded Anicut dam in Hasreta village which was mostly destroyed by heavy rainfall. As a result, irrigation was greatly reduced, crops dried up, cattle were left with less drinking water and women were forced to travel to the neighboring village of Medi to fetch water. In a village that relied on agriculture for its main source of income, the effects were devastating.

The village with support from Seva Mandir rebuilt the anicut from scratch in 2009. The material purchased included cement, gravel, stones, sand and metal. The villagers contributed their labor and were paid by Seva Mandir; who also provided the technical expertise in building the anicut.

The anicut in Hasreta would be as useful as it was in 1988. Anicuts help the local communities with improve crop yields, increase cattle drinking water, recharge the local wells (drinking water) and cut down on migration to cities for work. In 2008, Seva Mandir built a total of 11 anicuts.
