Success Story

SFCD has been working towards implementing programs for disabled people. Over the last 18 years SFCD has been working towards implementing programs that enable people with disabilities access equal opportunities in all spheres of life. The rich experience gained in this field has reinforced our conviction that the problems of severely retarded people are not being given enough attention-especially in response to the question that the parents of such people ask us, "what will happen to my child when I die"?

We felt that North Delhi where no Live -in facility is available would be the right place to set up a living center for severely Intellectually disabled people. In this new and different living environment full time attendants and care takers look after them and cater for all their needs. They are trained to their essential chores in a phased manner in consultation with psychologists. Under expert guidance at our vocational training center they are also trained in vocational skills. The inmates are served Milk/Tea, fruit and Dalia/Bread for breakfast and chapatti, rice and a minimum of 2 dishes for lunch and dinner. We have recently set up a separate Transit Vocational Training Center in the same premises to overcome the administrative problems. Lunch is served at the Vocational Center - which is also under our management.

After overcoming a large no of bureaucratic hurdles we have finally succeeded in setting up this home for the severely intellectually disabled people at Shakti Nagar in North Delhi. The response of a majority of the residents is extremely encouraging. Some of them profess to a new found enthusiasm in life in their new home. Their parents are delighted to see the very positive change that has come about in their own lives and that of their wards. For the overall well being of the inmates it is essential that wholesome nutrition through breakfast, mid day meal, lunch, snacks and dinner are given to them at regular intervals.
