Success Story

Perumalla Chukkamma is 65 years old widow living at Vangaigudem village of Eluru Mandal. Perumalla Chukkamma is 65 years old widow living at Vangaigudem village of Eluru Mandal. Chukkamma has two sons and they are settled. But one son has HIV and is living separately in the village. The other son has a job but is not taking care of his old mother. Nobody is there to take care of Chukkamma. In her old age, she is making a living by washing dishes in the neighbours houses. But this amount is not sufficient for her meals. And she has undergone eye operation and her health condition is also not good.

In this regard, KRDSO staff visited Chukkamma and counselled her. After studying the economic conditions of Chukkamma, KRDSO supported her with Rice, Dal, Cooking Oil and general medicine. After that organization has joined Chukkamma in a local Grannies club. (KRDSO has identified 200 Grannies in the field areas and formed Grannies Clubs with 10 - 15 grannies as a club.) Through this club, they educate themselves and discuss their problems in the club. Apart from this, KRDSO use to conduct meetings with them and sensitize them on social evils and their role towards eradicate them from the communities, especially on HIV/AIDS. So these women use to interact with women and youth and sensitize them about HIV/AIDS. After this they refer them to ICTC/PPTCT. Like this, they enjoy their work and share their experiences in the club.

We noticed the improvement in the health condition of Chukkamma. And she is able to take 2 meals per day without depending upon anybody. And she happily involving in Grannies club meetings and sensitizing communities on HIV/AIDS.
