Success Story

Gyan Sarkar is a middle aged man from Bihar , Gyan Sarkar is a middle aged man from Bihar , who once suffered from cancer of the rectum. He works as a labour in his village and comes from a family of poor peasants. At home, he has a wife and 3 young children to support.

Gyan visited the IRCH , AIIMS after a long time for his yearly check-up . CanSupport Day care volunteers were there at IRCH to bring in out-of-town cancer patients and their care givers to befriend them. Gyan joined the group. At the Day Care Gyan sat in the corner, stone faced. One of the volunteers at the Day Care noticed this and went up to him. As she extended her compassionate ear to him, Gyan started to cry. In his weep he said that the doctor has informed him that his cancer is back and his stage is terminal . The volunteer consoled Gyan and empathized with him. She then requested him to participate in the healing therapy planned for the day. At the Day care , along with all the other patients Gyan took part in the breathing exercise and reflexology session .

At the end of the session there was visible change in Gyan. Gyan who had come to the Day Care outraged and strained with his life was now calm in the caring atmosphere. It gave him a nice break to from the stress of his enduring pain and also helped him to understand and accept his own illness. Today Gyan comes every month to IRCH , AIIMS for his chemotherapy and every time when his condition permits him, he never misses a chance to be a the CanSupport Friday Day Care , where he knows volunteers are there for him.
