Rajee, a mother of three, belonging to a lower middle class family, was emotionally shattered when her husband was diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his leg. Rajee, a mother of three, belonging to a lower middle class family, was emotionally shattered when her husband was diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his leg. This was not the first time in her life that Rajee had faced a traumatic moment; she had faced many hardships in the past. These included the death of her first husband, who left her with three young children to support, and constant violence at the hands of her in-laws. The discovery that her second husband now had cancer was understandably the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.

Rajee slowly gathered herself and started to accompany her husband when he went for his treatment to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (A.I.I.M.S). It was on one such visit that she met the CanSupport team and came to know about their work. After hesitating for three days, she finally plucked up the courage to call the CanSupport Telephone Helpline. Due to financial constraints, her first request when the telephone executive answered was to call her back; which she did.

In this first call, Rajee shared her husband’s condition and voiced her concern about him, her children and the financial strain they were facing. The helpline informed her about CanSupport’s free of charge Home Care service and shared details from their database about organizations that provide financial assistance. Rajee was grateful for the information and also readily agreed to register for a Home Care visit. The Home Care team started visiting her house regularly thereafter to look after her husband, Vinod. As her husband’s sole caregiver, and with no one else to share her troubles with, Rajee became a constant caller to the helpline.
