Success Story

10-year old Girija (name changed) left with her mother for the Red Light Area of Chilakaluripeta 10-year old Girija (name changed) left with her mother for the Red Light Area of Chilakaluripeta from her own community near Bhimavaram in West Godavari District. Her mother, started prostitution form a small house with two other women. Owing to their moving form one place to the other, Girija had to stop her schooling after class 3. Girija was asked to stay out when customers visited the house for sex work. She was at times asked to get cigarettes/beedis, soda, cold drinks etc. for the customers. One day when the women went to a lodge for prostitution, a regular customer of her mother came to her house and sexually abused her. When she protested, he beat her up and tried to molest her. Hearing her cries, the neighbours came there and saved her form him. Girija became psychologically very weak and was hysteric. She used to shout at men for no reason. Her mother was unable to take care of her as she herself was addicted to alcohol.

The volunteers of HELP rescued her and brought her to the HELP run Home for counseling and protection of such innocent children. The trained counselor of the Home patiently tried to counsel her to overcome her trauma. It took months for this. However, personal counseling, counseling by the senior inmates of the Home, her being mingled with other children in games etc. helped her build confidence and being positive about her future.

Now Girija, 12 year old, is totally a different girl. She is active and actively involves herself in cultural activities conducted from time to time at the Home. She had been motivated to resume her schooling. She is presently studying in Class 5 in the Home as a private candidate. She is willing to attend the secondary school for class 6 as a regular student.
