Success Story

The farmers of Vemavaram village of Prakasam District have no initiatives about on sustainable agricultural practices.

The farmers of Vemavaram village of Prakasam District have no initiatives about on sustainable agricultural practices. They used to follow costly of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and follow mono cropping system, which are the causes to decrease the income on crop and face the crop loses constantly. Apart from inflicting direct losses insect pests also act as vectors for several viral diseases. Because of insects on their products, they used to loose right price in the market. All these situations lead the farmer to become debt waivers and commit suicide in these areas.

CERDS has identified 20 potential farmers in this village and organized two training programmes by using the services of experts. In these trainings, farmers were sensitized on the need of adoption of scientific methods in agricultural practices i.e, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Integrated Disease Management (IDM) and Organic farming that produce quality of products at low cost investment. In addition to the training camps, farmers’ field schools were also conducted to educate the farmers on the various pests and diseases that are being attacked from time to time in their fields and make them professionals to identify various measures to overcome the identified problems.
The level of Knowledge of the trained farmers were increased and they were realized the need and necessity of producing the qualitative agricultural products. Instead of using chemical fertilizers the use of organic manure is increased. 60% of the farmers are following poly crop system. Two farmers have formed vermin compost units. Some of the farmers are raising seeds with their own knowledge. The trained farmers became as master trainers in the village. Village became paradigm for sustainable agricultural practices.
