Success Story

Khurshida was born deafblind in a remote village, Umrapur in Barabanki district, (UP), where the only reality was abject poverty. Khurshida was born deafblind in a remote village, Umrapur in Barabanki district, (UP), where the only reality was abject poverty. A hand to mouth existence coupled with social stigma would have taken mammoth resilience from Khurshida’s mother to sustain her. Due to lack of proper nutrition, care and training, Khurshida lived a vegetable existence in a corner of the hut, totally dependant on her mother, surviving on a bowl of rice starch.

It is very rightly said, You cannot teach a hungry stomach. Other than providing her with needs based training and support, we also took care of her nutritional requirements. Under the intense daily living skills and communications training given to her by her educator, Satyabhama, Khurshida can now sit up and move around the house. She is learning the language of touch to communicate with and recognize family.

She still has a long way to go. She will learn the sign language for better communication which may one day open the way to a better self dependant future. Khurshida is among the lucky few who have found educators like Satyabhama. There are many more waiting in their silent, colourless world.
