Success Story

Ashwini is a 11 yr old blind girl residing in Khar ( east ) in Mumbai.

Ashwini is a 11 yr old blind girl residing in Khar ( east ) in Mumbai. She lost her father in 2008 following high BP. Ther are alltogether 10 members in her family. Her elder sister had to discotinue her studies and then she began working in the printing press where her father was working. All she did this was to support their family income Ashwini was born prematurely and was born blind. Fortunately she was reffered to NAB by a family friend well in time so that her eduction could tart more or les at the right time.

Ashwini was admitted to Dharamdas & Chandiram English Primary School inKhar ( West ) in Standard I. Intially the school authorities were reluctant to admit a totally blind child but gradually agreed to the proposal after regular support was assured on behalf of the NAB. Our Itinerant Teacher started visiting the family and the school regularly to provide training in special skills such as braille ,orientation and mobility, sue of special devices ,activities of daily living etc.. After some initial preparation Ashwini was given a Braille Kit comprising the basic educational devices needed by blind children. Since then she hgas been atttendibng school regularly.
Ashwini has been doing extremely well in academcis all these years. She is now studying in Standard IV. She is fully conversant with english braille grade I and can read the same with considerable speed and accuracy. Grade II i.e. braille contractions and abbreviations has been recently introduced by our itinerant teachers. Similarly we are also introducing bharati braille i.e. for hindi & marathi. She has been taught to write on the braille slate and later has been given a brailler by NAB which she can use with resonble proficiency. She does her homework in braille using the brailler. She can perform additions , substractions and multiplications with reasonable competence on the Taylor’s arithmetic frame and is now in the process of learning division.
