Success Story

A lot of adolescent and young girls in the slum & rural communities are not able to go in for higher education A lot of adolescent and young girls in the slum & rural communities are not able to go in for higher education and may in fact even drop out of school due to restrictions on mobility or due to economic constraints or other family responsibilities. Rubishta is one such example who belongs to a large family of 10 family members. Her father is a plumber and her mother work in a factory, Rubishta dropped out of the school to do household chores and to take care of her younger siblings. At such a young age she has understood the value of money and wanted to earn.

The Vocational skill training thus becomes very important for them so that they can become self reliant and self confident. Stitching and embroidery are trades that girls can take up from their home setting. Rubishta thus approached Child Survival India and enrolled in 6 months sewing course. She now stitches salwar suits, blouses, petticoats, etc. for her neighbours and earns Rs 600-700 a month. For her, even this is very valuable as she can now help decrease burden of her father to some extent and also give an occasional treat of sweets or cold drink to her younger siblings.

After completion of the course, all the girls become capable to stitch their own clothes as per their own designs. In addition, 6-8 girls started it as a professional enterprise and stitched clothes for others in the neighborhood and/or they started assisting in some piece rate work for factories. Rubista hopes to gradually expand her work and use her skill in stitching and emroidery to make accessories like belts, mobile bags,hair bands etc. and market them in weekly bazaar or in local shops.
