Success Story

Salma worked as a rag picker at the dumping ground near Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. Salma worked as a rag picker at the dumping ground near Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. She picked up plastic packets, iron and wood pieces out of the garbage with bare hands. She wore open slippers thus her feet were also exposed to all the dust & dirt of garbage. Thus she developed cracked feet and cracks & cuts in her hand. She also did not take daily baths and did not cut her nails frequently. Thus lack of personal hygiene made her sick again & again. She had body rash and head lice too.

When Salma started coming to our learning center for street, working and slum children, the teacher in charge emphasized the importance of maintaining personal hygiene. She told Salma that she had to brush her teeth regularly, take bath daily, oil her hair, cream her hands, feet etc and also try and cover them up with plastic packets, if she cannot have gloves. All this was important for her health. Salma was provided a toilet kit every month comprising of a soap bar, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair oil, comb, face cream, vaseline etc.

Salma now takes a daily bath and takes care of her hands & feet, keeps them covered with plastic packets. She oils her hair and uses Vaseline on her feet so that they do not crack. Salma feels healthy and happy and no longer has head lice. Her skin allergies have reduced
