Success Story

Daikheda village in Udaipur district used to face severe scarcity of water due to frequent droughts, and this caused food scarcity due to low agricultural production. There were few jobs for the menfolk to pursue, but the womenfolk were affected to a greater degree by the scarcity of water, fodder and food in the village.

Sahyog constructed a small sub-surface dam on the Kheradi river to recharge the underground water in the area around the village. 25 percent of the total cost for the project was borne by the villagers while Sahyog financed the balance. Self-Help Groups based in the village were motivated to take up the regular maintenance of the asset developed.\t

14 open wells got recharged, providing much needed water for drinking and irrigation. Rabi wheat was sown on 15 hectares of land in 2001-02, a drought year. The 300 quintals of wheat produced benefited 26 tribal families. The villagers now have greater confidence and capacity for managing natural resources, and sufficient water is now available in the village for meeting most requirements.
