Success Story

Most teachers in schools feel that children cannot read on their own and manage everything in a class themselves.

Most teachers in schools feel that children cannot read on their own and manage everything in a class themselves. The school and classroom are meant to be places for explaining things to children and providing them answers. In this scheme of things, books are kept safely under lock and key, and issued to and taken back from children. Renu Bordia is a teacher who does not buy this theory.

Renu started taking books to her class at Vidya Bhawan and distributing them to the students there. Gradually, a student was allowed to handle the book exchange records. She then assigned the children the task of hunting answers to questions in the library books and the class gradually transformed. No books have been lost and the class library is running successfully with its limited resources.
Renu?s students have now acquired greater confidence and independence, and this is reflected in their behaviour outside the classroom as well. Most of them have also developed a keen interest in reading. Other teachers in the school are also considering it useful to have children read and learn on their own.
