Success Story

Merlins mother Sumitha was physically and verbally abused by her husband quite frequently. Merlins mother Sumitha was physically and verbally abused by her husband quite frequently. In spite of having spent huge amount of money for her wedding, she did not leave a peaceful life. Sumitha s husband and his family threatened to kill her and all the 3 daughters several times. Sumitha was beaten up several times by her husband. Unable to bear the torture, she went on to commit suicide. Merlin, the eldest daughter of Sumitha, who is just 7 years old, rescued her mother. After separating from her husband, her mother decided to live for her children.

Sumitha was not earning though she had completed graduation. Her Mom works as a maid in a hospital and does not earn much. With 3 children to support both for food and other needs, Sumitha was looking for help. She got to know about the Trust s activities through one of her contacts and met the trust representative one day with her problems. Her children were unable to wear good dress or buy books/notebooks etc. In fact Sumitha struggled for her bus fare too. Shriram Foundation offered her a job in the school as Administrative Assistant with a salary of Rs.5000/- per month. It also gave admission to all her three children in the school. Merlin who saw her mother suffering in the hands of her father saw her happy for the first time after she got a job and they started going to a good English Medium school. Today Merlin and her sisters are happy and secure about their future.

Merlin and her sisters are provided with good quality education in the school. From being poor learners (due to various problems at home), they have started showing signs of improvement. Instructions are given in English and they are able to respond in English when questions are asked for few words. Her breakfast and evening snacks are covered through healthy porridge. With good nutritious food and a good learning environment, Merlin s who is III Std now is confident about facing life though she cannot express it in her own words. Her mother is happy that all the three children are in safe hands.
