Overview

The PALNA Shishu Kendras are DCCW's most recent initiative. Started in August 2014, these centres are aimed at providing half-day care for pre-school under-privileged children in the age group 2-6 years, and preparing them to attend mainstream schools. Starting with two centres in 2014 we are currently running ten centres across various slum and resettlement areas of Delhi. However this DO covers only 3 of our centres in which over 150 children are enrolled. There is a charge of Rs 250/- per child per month, where the parents are able to give it. Where the children hail from impoverished families, they are provided with basics like woollen clothes and shoes by the kendra.
For many of the children this is the first experience of anything resembling a classroom, and many have never held a pencil or crayon before. Children also participate in games and occasions like birthdays, Christmas, Diwali, New Year etc. are celebrated at the kendras, and the significance of the days is explained to the children. The atmosphere is cheerful and caring. The children look forward to coming to the Kendra.

How It Works

• Each class of 45-50 children has a dedicated teacher and helper running the class.
• The hours of operation are 0930-1300 hours, Mondays through Saturdays (except second Saturdays). Every helper has also passed Class XI.
• Additionally, we have a supervisor and a program officer who oversee and monitor the implementation of this programme across all the centres. The helper and supervisor step in if a teacher is on leave.
• We also have a part-time doctor who does monthly medical check-ups of the children and advises on nutrition and any other medical issue that the child may be found to have.
• A snack is given to the children.
• The programme runs out of our centres in these locations.

Who benefits from the programme?

• Pre-school under-privileged children in the age group 2-6 years, with priority given to children of working mothers.
• The average family income is about Rs 11000/- per month.
• Parents of the children are indirect beneficiaries as they are counseled and advised on the process to get the child admitted into a school - what documents will be needed and how to get them, and help in filling forms as well as preparing them to answer questions they may be asked.

Soham loves to learn
Soham was three years old when he joined our Palna Shishu Kendra in 2014. He lives with his family of six members, including an elder sister and his grandparents - in a rented room. His father works as a driver and his mother is a homemaker.
As per his parents, Soham loves sharing his learnings to his elder sister at home. In 2016, he got admission into the prestigious St Xavier’s School on his own merit.
At the Kendra, Soham attended pre-school, learning the basics of reading and writing, as well as general knowledge, learning about his environment, etc. He was also taught basic hygiene, his health was checked to ensure that he was not malnourished. A keen learner, he picked up very fast and was soon on top of his class. A little guidance given to his mother and grandparents who attended Parent Teacher Meetings helped them support him at home.
