Overview

In the early 1970s , a socialist group of youth began seeking solutions to social and political problems of the rural community with the general aim of achieving a more just and happy society. After nearly 20 years of effort and agitations, they concluded that socio-political change was not possible without economic change. Hence, they established Manavlok, in 1982, a voluntary organization for the socio-economic upliftment of the rural poor. The beneficiaries in this program are women who are underprivileged but have the will to break the shackles and become financially independent.

How It Works

• Manavlok doesn't work directly with the beneficiaries for this project-they work with them through local SHGs. The SHGs identify members in their group who are in dire need of income and provide their names to Manavlok. The field workers from Manavlok then do visits to verify their need before finalising.
• Once the beneficiaries are finalised, Manavlok sends cheques worth Rs. 20,000 per beneficiary to the SHG, which then pases the cheques along to the beneficiaries- the beneficiaries then go to the local Ambejogai market to purchase livestock/poultry of their choice. The cost is usually more than the 20,000 given, so they supplement it with their own savings/loans.
• Once the beneficiaries buy the animals of their choice, they save their bills for further inspection by the Manavlok field staff.

Statistics

• 16 women have benefited and became financially independent last year in the small villages of Ambajogai

Helping women to earn livelihood
It has been observed that landless single women faces very critical problems in the society. When it comes to their regular family expenditure, their whole earning is dependent on the small business they run. When these women meet financial problem, they get pushed towards private money lenders. The interest rate of private money lenders is very high as it becomes very difficult to retain their previous livelihood status.
Once the beneficiaries are finalised, Manavlok sends cheques worth Rs. 20,000 per beneficiary to the SHG, which then passes the cheques along to the beneficiaries- the beneficiaries then go to the local Ambejogai market to purchase livestock/poultry of their choice. The cost is usually more than the 20000 given, so they supplement it with their own savings/loans.
Our project helped them in increasing their livelihood status in the form of regular income from direct economical help to expand or form a new small business like poultry. This makes them stable and comfortable to concentrate in her regular activities with more confidence.
