Overview

ICARE runs an Outreach Programme that aims at reaching modern eye care services to the doorsteps of the patients.

The Basics

Rural elderly poor have little or no access to eye care facilities that are by and large available only in urban centres. Often suffering from easily treatable ailments, such as cataract, they are forced to live a life dependent upon their sighted kin. This Outreach Programme aims at providing these services to the elderly, thus empowering them to lead an independent life.

How It Works

• Patients requiring surgical interventions are transported to ICARE Hospital in Noida.
• Post surgery, they are dropped back to their respective peripheral centres.
• A major portion of the outreach programme is free, with a ratio of better off patients receiving subsidized care.
• Patients from villages and slums most often do not have any documentary proof of their financial status.
• Hence they are taken at their word as to their economic standing.
• There may be more than one camp in any one day.
• None of the patients pay anything.
• All postoperative check-ups are carried out at the centre itself.
• The ICARE Ambulance with a team including Medical & Paramedic staff, field workers, Coordinator/Counsellor and Optical Fitter visit the campsite on prefixed dates, as advertised before the camp.
• People attending the camps are screened for refractive error, cataract, glaucoma, and other ocular diseases.
• Patients selected for surgery are examined for diabetes and hypertension.
• Those requiring spectacles are refracted and spectacles are dispensed at nominal cost.
• Special attention is paid to pediatric patients as childhood blindness can have a huge impact upon the economy of the country.
• Patients identified for surgery are brought in ambulances to the base hospital.
• A detailed examination and investigation are conducted.
• Surgery is performed the next day and on the third day, first postoperative examination is done.
• Patients found fit are discharged and sent back by ambulance.
• Their stay, food, medicines, transportation and surgery is provided free of cost.
• Weekly visits are made to the camps sites for follow-up of operated patients.
• Fresh cases are examined and picked up for surgery.

Statistics

• 20-25 – Number of patients who are brought back from any one campsite to the hospital for surgery
• 45-80 – The age range of patients who are brought for surgery
• 98% - Percentage of patients who are elderly
• 100% - Percentage of patients who are elderly at times
• 738 – Average number of surgeries per month that are conducted free of cost

From darkness to light
Nathu Lal a forest guard from Bhadurpur had experienced worst phase of his life couple of years ago. His body got paralyzed due to some intake of toxic food substance. Six months ago he realized that he had haziness in his vision. He was overjoyed to know that an eye screening camp was organized by ICARE. He got his eye checked and it was diagnosed that he had cataract in his right eye. He has three children one girl and two sons, all married
He was suggested for a surgery. By hearing the word surgery he got little worried not knowing what the expenses would be. He was hesitant to get into the ICARE ambulance leaving for the hospital. When he got to know that the surgery would be free he relaxed and got into the ambulance. He was brought into the base hospital along with other patients. He was examined again and his operation was done was successfully done the next day
He realized that without vision life was dark and bleak. After surgery with vision restored he feels that all his problems are over.
