Overview

The Association of People with Disability (APD) is a Bangalore based organization that is working on the comprehensive rehabilitation of economically marginalized people with disabilities. It works for children, youth and adults with various types of disabilities - primarily those with physical disability, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, development delay, and speech and multiple disabilities. The Association of People with Disability’s livelihood programme is designed to prepare persons with disability to achieve self-sufficiency through employment or self-employment options by providing vocational training, personality development, language skills, education support and career guidance.

The Basics

Less than half of disabled youth in India have completed high school or have employable skills. Very few PWDs of working age are gainfully employed. Majority of the disabled working population lives in the rural areas. The disheartening numbers don't tell the entire story. The challenges range from inadequate tactical solutions to widespread societal reluctance. Identifying the skill gap, creating awareness about sustainable career options and providing access to disability-appropriate training are as vital as sensitizing the community and businesses to build support systems and include young persons with disability in the mainstream.

How It Works

• Courses offered include electronic mechanic and fitter foundation course.
• The mid-day meals provided for trainees comes from Oberoi Hotel.

Statistics

• 1 % - Percentage of PWDs of working age who are gainfully employed
• 16-35 yrs. – Age-group of persons with disabilities enrolled in the livelihood programme
• 40% – Percentage of disabled youth in India who have completed high school or who have employable skills
• 70% – Percentage of disabled working population living in the rural areas

Even in Disability there is Ability
Mamata is from a poor family. Afflicted by polio as a 6 month baby;she was operated at 6 years. She did not get adequate post surgical treatment or any mobility aids. Father is paralyzed in both legs and her brother is a labourer. She completed SSLC in a special school for disabled. She believed people with disability cannot do anything worthwhile in life. She was feeling helpless and hopeless.
Mamata was identified and assessed in a career guidance workshop organized by APD for people with disability and was selected for two years’ Industrial Training Course at APD Campus in Bangalore. The APD environment and counseling motivated her. She was given calipers and regular therapy at APD which improved her mobility. Her boarding & lodging in Bangalore is taken care of by APD.
Mamata actively pursues her training course and participates in co-curricular activities. She is a good singer and won the first prize in a singing competition organized by Inner Wheel Club. Mamata aspires to do higher education after completion of this training course. She wants to work and support her family. Mamata is now cheerful, focused and confident to face life.
