Overview

The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF) helps underprivileged children by providing them with a healthy, balanced meal that they would otherwise have to work for. The meal is an incentive for them to continue their education. It helps reduce the dropout rate to an enormous extent and increases classroom attendance.

The Basics

Several underprivileged children in India are out of school and into child labour in order to earn a single meal in a day. The surest way to break this cycle of poverty is through education. Education can significantly improve the quality of life of a family for generations to come. When the basic needs of a child such as food are not met, education often becomes the last priority.

How It Works

• The food is cooked in centralized kitchens at different locations, which meets International Standard Organization (ISO) guidelines.
• The programme is implemented in partnership with the government of India and various State governments.
• Today Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest (not-for-profit) mid-day meal programme serving wholesome food to several school children across different states in India.

Statistics

• 10 – Number of states where the programme is run
• 10,661 – Number of schools where the programme is run
• 1.4 million – Number of children who are provided with mid-day meals through this programme
• 8.1 million – Number of underprivileged children in India who are into child labour due to lack of basic necessities like food

Food for Education
Suchismita is the eldest of three siblings, and the second born is studying at the same school in third standard. Her father runs a tea stall and her mother supplements the meagre income by taking stitching orders.
The mid-day meal provided by Akshaya Patra at school is a blessing in disguise to such families. At least two of the children from this family are guaranteed a nutritious meal every day besides acquiring free education.
According to teachers, Suchismita is a very attentive student. Her favourite subjects are English and Social Science.
