Overview

“Palna,” meaning “cradle,” is Delhi Council for Child Welfare – DCCW’s Home for abandoned, homeless and destitute children. Palna is possibly DCCW’s most well-known programme. Established in 1978, and located in Qudsia Bagh, Old Delhi, it is a haven of peace, security and stability for the children who come here.

How It Works

• A palna is placed outside the gates of the compound to allow parents to give up their child without having to identify themselves. This is how most of the children are received at Palna.
• Children also come to Palna through the police and through hospitals and clinics. When it is established that the child is abandoned or has not been claimed by its family, all efforts are made to place him/her into adoption.
• Palna is licensed for in-country and inter-country adoptions. Till date, they have placed several children in loving families - selected after rigorous screening and evaluation procedures.
• All children without any disability are eventually placed in families. There are a few with minor disabilities who are placed in good families too.
• Infants very often arrive in a precarious state of health. Examples include low birth weight babies, hypothermic babies, babies with trauma and congenital defects. Survival is the most immediate challenge for these newborns.
• A Medical Crisis Unit (MCU) equipped with an incubator, ventilator, a phototherapy unit etc handles emergencies among infants and new-borns.
• Round-the-clock doctors, nurses and care givers, an emergency care medical unit, and access to hospitals close by ensure that the children are given the best possible medical care.
• The MCU brings children to a state of health where they will be ready for adoption.
• Palna receives strong support from the hospitals in the vicinity. Mortality in Palna today is negligible.
• However, all this comes at a price - and the medical unit requires a massive financial outflow. Since Palna’s work is dependent on donations, DCCW is always in need of money to sustain the MCU and overall medical programme.

Jivini – A regular childhood after surgical treatments
Jivini came to PALNA through the cradle placed outside. She was new-born infant (clinically a 5-6 days old, 33-34 weeks gestation). She weighed just 900 gm and was a case of severe intra-uterine growth restriction. Additionally her breathing was very rapid. Over the next 6 weeks she had persistent right-sided pneumonia, and did not show proper development.
Jivini was treated at the Medical crisis Unit at Palna on anti-tubercular treatment by the Palna doctors. Over the next few months she slowly responded to the intensive care and treatment, and by the time she was about 9 months old, she was a bonny baby physically. Her mental development was also going well.
Jivini was placed in adoption when she was just over a year old, and a few years on is a beautiful, bright and happy little girl today, thriving in every way, living a completely normal life.
