Success Story

There is almost no positive information given to families of deaf children, especially in rural communities and city slums where we work. These families don’t know what their children can learn and achieve.

Lakshana is a bi-annual newsletter written specifically for families of deaf children. These newsletters contain one or two articles by experts in the field of disability, especially deafness, and articles by deaf children and their parents. This is an important tool to provide information and has come out of our belief in empowering families to make informed choices about the lives of their children. A mother contributed an article about how her deaf daughter had finished school and was now going to college. In a village in Karnataka the entire newsletter was read out to group of non literate parents by a community worker.

The villagers who heard this article being read out were visibly moved by the story of the young girl. One mother got up and said that she would make sure her deaf daughter goes to school and learns how to use a computer and she hopes that her daughter can succeed like the girl in the article.
