Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana give scholarships for higher education to almost all poor students barring a few belonging to economically backward category (EBC). BREAD Society fills this gap by awarding scholarships to such students provided their education, past and present, has been and is in govt. schools and colleges. These students are poor and cannot afford private school/college education. In fact, there are no other institutions where very poor students can go other than govt. schools and colleges.
Parents of a poor student cannot entirely fund the higher education of their brilliant ward. BREAD awards a scholarship of financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 6,000 per year to enable the student to pursue higher education. Our scholarship helps the beneficiary to supplement the meagre parental assistance enabling the beneficiary to pursue higher education without let or hindrance.
BREAD Scholars who received scholarships in 2016-17 could pursue their education without any hindrance. Their parents were happy that they did not have to impoverish themselves by borrowing funds for their education from the informal sector at exorbitant rates of interest. For obvious reasons, poor people do not get bank loans for the education of their children as they do not have an acceptable track record of banking.
