Success Story

Motumala village is situated on the sea shore. Motumala village is situated on the sea shore. Salt making is a major economic activity in this area. During the time of cyclones there are huge waves and the sea water directly enters into the salt pans and causes damage. Salt farming has to be discontinued during this period resulting in huge financials losses to over a 100 farmers.

SARDS identified this issue and mobilized resources and developed channels in the sea coast and planted mangrove saplings. Within one year the trees have grown well. The local communities were also mobilized to continue to protect the plantation in 30 acres of land.

With the newly created mangrove forest the effect of the cyclones on salt pans got reduced. The channels received the flood water and stopped damage of salt pans. The salt farmers could get the fruits of their hard work. The farmers say the forest developed in the areas help them to get rid of floods caused by the high tidal waves. Many varieties of fish are thriving in the mangrove forests which helps the eco balance.
