Mother and Child Care: the intervention onHealth and Nutrition.
Safe Motherhood in Sundarbans is a program run by Sabuj sangha to decrease the ratio of child mortality and also to improve the knowledge level of mothers and the overall community.Due to inadequate health facilities by both government and non-government organizations and remoteness of Sundarbans, the entire population depends on quacks especially pregnant women. This project aims at providing doorstep support for reducing maternal and child mortalities through preventive and curative health services and ensuring institutional delivery. Sabuj Sangha is providing care to the community people covering mother and child health, ante and postnatal care, immunization, family planning and allied issues.
The Hospital (Swarnalata Sabuj Seva Sadan) is equipped for both OPD and IPD services along with labour room, operation theatre, pharmacy, pathology, USG & Radiology units so that patients can avail all required services from hospital. As inputs the following are being done at the community level. An awareness program for the expecting mothers on how to take care of them, about child birth and child care is given to pregnant mothers.Information is also provided at the community level about the benefits of child birth in the hospital.
Presently, the Organisation is focusing on community health and institutional health. There are trained female health workers who intervene at the community level through awareness generation on pregnant / lactating mother and child care, immunization, nutritional food and motivate them to take institutional health care and refer them to our own hospital i.e. Rural Health & Training Centre (RHTC) / Swarnalata Sabuj Seva Sadan. Thanks to the centre, the rate of child mortality has been reduced, and quality of child care has improved. The people are going to hospital and dependence upon quacks has been reduced considerably.
