Success Story

Prema, age 9, lived on the streets of Mysore with her mother and siblings for years Prema, age 9, lived on the streets of Mysore with her mother and siblings for years. She suffered chronic ear infections since she was a baby and although she attended government school, her ear problems hindered her ability to learn. Prema also had to beg to help the family get enough money for their daily meals, often eating just one or two meals a day.

Operation Shanti helped Prema get proper treatment for her ear infections, which included two surgeries last year and helped her through her treatment for tuberculosis. We brought Prema to live at Karunya Mane, our shelter from where she attends school every day. Although nine years old, she started this year in first grade and is getting straight Bs in her classes. At Karunya Mane, Prema also takes karate lessons and gets proper medical support

Today, with our support, Prema and the other children at Karunya Mane get to enjoy their childhood years with education, friends to play with, good food and hygiene every day under proper adult supervision. Her mother is now lives in a rented house with help from us and is very relieved that her daughter is safe having good education and away from the dangers of the street
