The Right to Education ends at Age 14. Children typically reach Grade 8 or 9 by that age. It is also the first time that they pass or fail a year as per the SarvaShikshaAbhiyaan that mandates that no child should be left out. The positives of completing a high school education is not always obvious and the temptation to drop out is immense. Added to this is the lack of clarity of education and career options after Grade 10 or 12. It is this context that Antarang runs the CareerAware program in Mumbai’s schools and junior colleges.
How It Works
CareerAware is a career guidance and planning programme that works provides much needed awareness and direction to students between the 9 and 12 Grades. Through a structured and proprietary tool that has been developed n consultation with counselors, educators and psychologists, students discover their strengths, interests, aptitudes and personality traits, are exposed to various career options most relevant to them and arrive at actionable career plans. Antarang has normed this tool over 2000 students over the past 2 years and has found it to be relevant and filling a well articulated need.
The typical Career Aware beneficiary is a 15-year-old student in Grade 9 at one of Mumbai’s night schools. He or she is a first generation learner and is in the process of completing schooling against many odds. There is a high likelihood that the student is also working in the informal sector to add to the family income. The student is aware and has accepted that an education is critical to better employment opportunities but is unclear of what job to choose or what course of higher education to take.
