Overview

The programme aims at providing healthy and dignified life for People Living with HIV (PLHIV) by reduction in poverty, discrimination and human rights violation by improving self-confidence, health, economic status and social acceptance. Due to family situations and poor economic background the children are deprived of education. They are forced to discontinue their studies. Most of them are orphans or semi orphans and looked after by relatives. Their relatives can only manage their basic needs and cannot support the cost of education. In case where children live with HIV/ AIDS afflicted parents, the parents simply cannot afford education costs as, due to their illness, they are irregular at work and have to spend their earnings on their medical expenses.

How It Works

• 46 HIV/AIDS infected/affected children of whom 12 children are studying in high school and 34 children studying in regular colleges, polytechnic colleges, Industrial Training institutes.
• The scholarships range from Rs.1000 to Rs.10000.
• For school students the scholarship is a reimbursement through cheque after the student submits the fee receipt.
NMCT has an agreement with 3 colleges RAMU college, Eshwar college and Akshaya college. In these colleges one-third of the fees will be paid by NMCT; another one-third fee will be covered by college itself and remaining amount will be paid by students.
• For these colleges NMCT pays directly to the college through cheque.
• For the other colleges they pay through cheque after the student submits the fee receipt.
• After Grade 10, NMCT offers the students career counselling for them to understand their interests and abilities. NMCT suggests that students take job related course which help them to start earning within 2-3 years instead of waiting for 6-7 years.
• Courses suggested are ITI, or other diploma courses like nursing.
• If the student is very smart and if the student is very confident of doing other courses, then they are encouraged to do so.
NMCT organizes an event called Roja Kuttam where they meet all students once in a year at one place and they distribute school bags and stationary items to school students.

A dream comes true
Master Prabhakarn is a 16-year-old, partially visually challenged boy. He has studied up to Grade 10. He is infected by HIV/AIDS. Both his parents are also infected. As his family is extremely poor he was not able to study further and was looking for a job to support the meagre family income.
NMCT field staff came across Prabhakaran during a baseline survey. NMCT raised funds through local contribution and helped him join a Diploma course at Sree Narayana Guru Polytechnic College, Coimbatore. NMCT also supported the cost of his eye treatment.
Prabhakaran and his parents are very happy to receive the support for his education. After completing the diploma he hopes to do his Bachelor of Engineering with the dream of getting a job with good salary to support his family.
