Success Story

Kumari used to feel tired and weak all the time, though she is just 18 years old.

Kumari used to feel tired and weak all the time, though she is just 18 years old. She is married and has one male and two female children already. Her husband Krishnachari works as a casual labourer. The entire family are weak & anaemic. This condition had started hindering her day-to-day activities. Her blood count revealed that she was Anaemic (Hb. 7.9gms.). But she didn t have enough money to go to the doctors or for the medication. Though she had a backyard, it was full of parthaneium.

Kumari joined the Self Help Group Akkamahadevi Mahila Swa Sahaya Sangha, which - ( most of the time)was promoted by IHDUA. During one of the meetings, the staff of IHDUA intimated about the advantages and benefits of the kitchen garden program, which was being donated by GiveIndia donors. Immediately Kumari took up this program. She took the help of her husband and children to clear her backyard and develop the kitchen garaden. The children used to help in watering and deweeding the plants.
After 40 days, the first crop of raddish was harvested. Then other vegetables like brinjal, cucumber, beans, etc., also started yielding. The family which did not have even one vegetable was now having different types of vegetables for eating, which was not only fresh but also tasty. According to Kumari This is a very useful program. We had a backyard which was full of weeds and parthneium. Mr.Papanna, staff of IHDUA motivated us to take up this program. We had 8 different types of vegetables being harvested behind our house. My husband and children helped me to water and de weed the plants. Within 40 days, we had a variety of vegetables for consumption and everyone used to look forward for lunch and dinner. After seeing my kitchen garden, 34 SHG members of our village took up this program. I would like to thank IHDUA & GiveIndia donors for giving this useful and wonderful program to us. Kumari and her entire family is healthy now.
