Success Story

We first noticed women head-loading fuel-wood in Pune city around 2006. We first noticed women head-loading fuel-wood in Pune city around 2006. This typically rural sight was new to behold in an urban metropolitan area. It was an unpaid and strenuous aspect of womens work, and we wondered why it was happening. There had been no mention of it in the press.

We had group discussions with women in 8 low-income localities. We visited 3 of them: Parvati, Khiskhinda and Ghorpadi. It threw light on how womens work has increased (longer time spent in both fuel-foraging and cooking) and how the shift to alternative fuels has led to adverse health effects. We published our findings to draw public attention

Our study pinpointed the link between the cutback in PDS kerosene supply under current government economic policy and fuel price increases and adverse impacts on women. Our skills in documenting such changes were refined and we gained specific insight into how policies affect womens livelihoods and health. Such short, specific documentation can go a long way, we feel.
