Success Story

We were contacted by the Jagruti School leading an initiative for educational change in the non-government schools of Akola District, Maharashtra. We were contacted by the Jagruti School leading an initiative for educational change in the non-government schools of Akola District, Maharashtra. They expressed the need for a gender sensitization programme that addresses both violence and sexual abuse in families and in the schools. This is an interior district with little previous access to outside resources and support.

Tathapi linked up with the Jagruti School to hold a 3-day orientation workshop on 28-30 June 2007 on the Body Literacy approach. The 22 participants (school principals and teachers) represented 17 non-government schools of Akola District. Through participatory methods, we oriented the participants to gender, sexuality and gender-based violence in the local contexts

The participants appreciated the sessions as helpful for demystifying gender for teachers, school authorities and parents. Each school accepted a resource kit with video clips, films, books, posters and training modules, etc. to use in the schools and with the local community. The local partner has requested sustained back-up from Tathapi to incorporate Body Literacy in school curricula.
