Success Story

A local organisation in Parbhani, Maharashtra, Saamaajik Nyaaya Aandolan, works towards realising the rights of the marginalised dalit community. It was aware of many health problems there, and with rapid and disturbing socio-economic changes, the need for sensitive sex education was growing among the youth. Health rights had not yet figured in the organisation work

On 18-19 December 2007, Tathapi held a health resource mela-cum-workshop with SNA at Parbhani town on two topics: Anaemia in women and Body literacy. We oriented two groups (25 field-workers, 40 college girls/teachers). Next day we trained 32 teachers from 12 schools, including a school for disabled children. In all, nearly 100 persons viewed the mela exhibition.

This was a first-time resource orientation on health issues in this interior, less developed district. The participants learned how to use the materials and SNA has stocked them for local dissemination. It has since paid specific attention to health issues and is developing a health programme for the villages in which it works. Body Literacy is introduced into the 12 schools involved in the mela
