Success Story

In Vadgaon-Dhaayari (off Sinhagad Road) the Pune Gharkaamgaar Sangathana (a domestic workers union) has about 500 members In Vadgaon-Dhaayari (off Sinhagad Road) the Pune Gharkaamgaar Sangathana (a domestic workers union) has about 500 members (total membership ~10,000). Aged from 18 to 58 years and educated from 0 to 9th standard, about 70% were married below the age of 18, with average age at first childbirth at 16.3 years. Even so, 10% had no living children. Their wages had increased but their health problems were unaddressed.

Tathapi and PGS together ran a Health Camp in the PMC Dispensary at Vadgaon-Dhaayari on 16th-17th May 2008. Check-ups were done for 152 women, including BP, Hb, urine test, internal exam with cervical cancer test, breast exam, eye test, etc. Referrals for specialist care included 4 for heart conditions, 5 for womb prolapse and 2 for cancer. We held educational sessions on Anaemia, TB and HIV.

For most women who attended this camp, it was a first experience of an overall check-up. At an evaluation session afterwards they reflected a new awareness of the importance of looking after their own health. They identified anaemia (in 60%) and womb prolapse (in nearly 3%) as problems for follow-up. The union used this experience to plan for improving the womens health, particularly of middle aged women
