It was difficult for the poor parents of 24-year-old Nirmala to find a match for her. It was difficult for the poor parents of 24-year-old Nirmala to find a match for her. She had poor eyesight, which was why Nirmala had been rejected many times. Like any other Indian family, her parents too wanted to see their daughter married to an eligible groom who would take good care of her. And if they did not marry her in time, she might be considered too old for marriage later.

It was then that Nirmalas parents heard of Sankara Nethralaya. They took her to the hospital, where her eyes were checked. Due her poverty, Sankara Nethralaya operated Nirmala without charging anything. The intraocular lens required in the operation was provided free of cost. This operation gave Nirmala more than her eyesight.

Nirmala is now married and has a child too. She gets short-term assignments as work, which help her earn for her family.
