Success Story

Mahesh 4 years and Sushmitha 2 years old are siblings Mahesh 4 years and Sushmitha 2 years old are siblings. Both are infected with HIV through their mother during their delivery. When their learnt that he had transmitted the disease to his wife and children, he abandoned the family when Sushmitha was a baby. Meeting basic food and health care for children and herself was a struggle for their mother

The terrible circumstances forced the mother to beg. One day she passed away on the streets and no one came forward to conduct the funeral rites because of the stigma of HIV. Both the children cried a lot for their mother. Finally the government conducted the last rites and the children were brought to DESIRE by our outreach team

At DESIRE the children were put on a medication programme for their infections. Sushmitha had developed many health complications due to lack of blood. She has undergone blood transfusion twice. However due care and monitoring by DESIRE helped the child recover and even gain some weight. Mahesh is in Grade 1 and attending school regularly
