Success Story

The prevalence rate of leprosy is high in Jharkhand The prevalence rate of leprosy is high in Jharkhand. In Dumka district as stigma is associated with the disease. Awareness about the facts of the disease was also less in the village. Many of the villagers were reluctant to take treatment.

We conducted awareness sessions in National Secondary School in Dumka district in Jharkhand with the help of street play to reduce stigma and importance of early detection of the disease. The children were also given facts about the need for early diagnosis and prompt treatment. They were taught to identify the cases by looking at the skin patches.

The children themselves organized rallies and created awareness among the villagers. They referred 5 suspected cases to the primary health center for confirmation. Along with leprosy the children were also made aware about HIV/AIDS. It made them aware and also enabled them to share their knowledge with the community and society at large.
