Success Story

Nayganpettai is a village located in Kanchipuram district lacks of proper toilet facilities Nayganpettai is a village located in Kanchipuram district. It has a higher secondary school with nearly 1200 students. One of the biggest issues identified by the peer educators who worked in the school was the lack of proper toilet facilities. The toilets did not have water supply and were not functional.

SPW peer educators took up the challenge. They set up a health club and began the process of restoring two set of toilets in the school. The students were given lessons on toilet usage, sanitation and Hygiene. After continuous training students have begun to use toilets properly and set up a Rota to ensure that different groups are responsible on a weekly basis for the maintenance of the toilets.

The school now has proper functional toilets for students. Following the success of the school, the panchayat president took the initiative of restoring the toilets in the community whereby the village was selected for the total sanitation Program in Kanchipuram District. SPW peer educators still work in the village and school ensuring the proper usage of toilets.
