9-year-old Pavan Kumar was identified by an ROH field worker as hearing impaired. 9-year-old Pavan Kumar was identified by an ROH field worker as hearing impaired. Pavans father was a Priest and his mother, a daily wage worker. He was a neglected child, living in unhygienic conditions, playing at drainages, wearing dirty clothes, and taking bath only occasionally. He had dropped out of school a long time back, as the teachers found him "uninteresting."

The ROH field worker intervened and counselled the parents. She stressed the importance of cleanliness, personal hygiene, education and other services. Pavan was checked up medically, provided with a Medical certificate, and applied for pension. He was trained in hearing aid usage and given an aid. His primary education was resumed. He was admitted into the rehabilitation centre.

Pavan has learned sign language with the help of the specially trained teachers. His parents feel good for him now, and hope for his bright future.
